Ryan White shares the story behind this Malibu beach home
There’s nothing better than walking into your house and truly believing it feels like home. A place that holds your most prized possessions and exudes your culture and tastes. This is exactly what my clients were looking for when they asked me to design their weekend getaway house in Malibu, California.
They had seen my previous work and entrusted me with their home. There’s no better compliment and nothing more wonderful than having a client who truly believes in your vision and lets you go for it. This always ends up working out best for the client when they can trust their designer, as there’s nothing worse than hiring someone and feeling like you have to constantly be keeping tabs on them or not trusting what they might produce. Again, in this circumstance – and typically with most of our clients – we had that trust and that’s when true magic happens.
Set directly on one of Malibu’s most prestigious beaches, this three level home offers nothing but the best in beach lifestyle entertainment. My clients wanted a true entertainer’s home and we were able to give them this by creating many areas where guests can lounge and enjoy the indoor/outdoor lifestyle. We made sure to keep materials rich in texture, such as the heather gray cashmere B&B Italia sofa on the main level. We paired this with a custom slate and iron dining table with green suede directors’ chairs. All of the outdoor furniture is custom designed and made in teak at our manufacturer in Downtown Los Angeles. We were also able to add in a richly appointed custom wet bar which acts as a second kitchen on the ground floor level heading straight out to the beach and ocean.
We listened to our clients’ needs and they wanted nothing but the best for the guests that they plan to entertain. We bleached out the wood floors and ceiling and then stained them white, allowing for a very clean and natural pallet. The interior doors were all lacquered in a very light gray which adds richness and shine to the sleek beach style. Exiting the main floor onto the beach level, we surrounded a beautiful fire pit with red Adirondack chairs to add that pop of sophisticated Americana style.
When it was all said and done, the project only took us six months, which is unbelievably quick for a project at this level. It all goes smoothly when you have clients who really allow you to do your job. On our big reveal day, the clients requested that we have a big “move that bus” moment! So, we ended up hiring a large bus to pull out in front of the home so the clients could have that big reveal. It was an absolute classic moment I’ll always remember.
We spent hours going through the house looking, touching and sitting on every piece of furniture. We spent so much time looking at all the beautiful accessories, artwork and treasured finds that now complete this perfect beach home. There are some things in life that are just absolutely priceless. Making clients and their families happy is one of those things. I can only hope that in the future I will be able to continue to transform people’s homes and make their wishes and dreams become reality.
