A Los Angeles native, Ryan Jackson brings a refined approach to the design of space and interiors. We caught up with him to find out his thoughts on Los Angeles design and what it takes to create a home that is the ultimate in luxury.
Q: How do you describe your design style? What is important when designing in a city like Los Angeles?
RJ: A response in design to the contemporary lifestyle. The finest material, pared back lines and a refined approach to living. Allowing the exterior of the home to (either visually or physically) connect with the outdoors. That to me is key to LA living in any style.
Q: What type of clientele do you work with and how do you satisfy their needs?
RJ: My clients don’t tend to work in a common industry or live in a certain geographic location. They are people who have a refined understanding of design and the use of space. I aim in every project to meet my client’s needs both aesthetically and functionally. A space that does not function well, is not great design.
Q: What is Studio Jackson best known for?
RJ: Studio Jackson is best known for its pared back design aesthetic, understanding of the built environment and designing spaces that offer more than the sum of their parts.
Q: You have your own collection, ‘Ryan Jackson’. What was the inspiration behind it and the mantra ‘luxury and contemporary design are not mutually exclusive’?
RJ: When concepting pieces for my line, I always strive to balance the finest materials, a refined aesthetics and pieces that work well. My mantra comes in response to people’s perception that contemporary pieces look hard, uninviting and I strive to challenge that notion in my line R|J Home.
Q: Any trends you foresee gaining momentum in 2018?
RJ: 2018 I feel will be a push toward simplification, quality and clarity. I feel people are ready to look past the overwhelming amount of home furnishings at their disposals and distill down to the best pieces that mean something. Well-made pieces that are constructed with an understanding of the bespoke furniture and the clientele that know the difference.
Q: What is the best tip you could give to someone designing their own home?
RJ: The most important tip I pass along always is “love the way you live.” Each piece in your home should speak to you. I tell my clients all the time, “you have to live with it every day…YOU need to love it.” A home that you truly connect to is the ultimate in luxury.
