Editor’s Letter from Dreams People Issue 2019
The People Issue is our annual look at who and what is shaping the world we live in today. In this special issue, we not only showcase the leaders of Southern California in business, innovation and philanthropy at the highest level; but we dive deep into the technologies, lifestyle adaptations and creative innovators who are designing the smart machines and devices that have transformed the way we live.
Technology has always been at the forefront of human progress. In only the last 100 years, we’ve gone from figuring out how to fly to designing machines that will connect directly to our brains via implantable ‘Neuro-lace’ devices. The question dares to be asked: Where will we be in 10 years? 50 years? No one is sure, but what we do know is that billions of dollars are being wagered on this very question. We profile the change-makers and companies pioneering this frontier.
It’s very likely that we as humans will begin merging with these technologies to take the next step in our evolution. The thought of people fusing with machines is frightening to some. Major players in the industry such as Elon Musk have even warned us about a future where machines overtake humans. While it’s a possibility, I prefer to imagine a world where humans coexist with smart devices, AI, Augmented and Virtual Realities to make life easier, more enjoyable and even extend our lifespans.
Speaking of people, I’ve gotten to know a lot of special people and their stories during my time as Editor-In-Chief at DREAMS. But none may be as special as the story of Angel Hankins, the young aspiring chef who, despite facing devastating news, opened her servient heart to others in need. This Gathering for an Angel offers the very best of humanity for you to see.
And last but not least, with the beginning of a new decade approaching, I’d like to thank all of our readers and sponsors for your support over the years. I’m proud to share this special issue with you and wish you all the best as we set off into the new Roaring 20s!
