Who holds the key to our future?
Editor’s Letter from Dreams People Issue 2018
I recently read an article which claimed that A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) will take over the world and that humans will no longer be necessary on the planet. I couldn’t disagree more with that theory.
Of course, there is a risk of A.I. developers creating a machine that goes full-blown I, ROBOT and comes to the realization it can run the world without humans. Notable figures such as Elon Musk have warned us this much, and I agree that we need to have regulations and safe-guards in place to ensure this doesn’t happen.
But I don’t picture doom and gloom for our future. Instead, I imagine a world where humans will coexist with smart devices that make it easier to navigate and enable innovation like we’ve never seen before.
It’s stated that more information and data was created in the last two years than in our planet’s entire history. Today, anything you want to know is available at your fingertips. People are using this great capability to have scientific breakthroughs, build new businesses and create a smarter, more thoughtful society.
Technology has always been at the forefront of human innovation and progress. In only the last 100 years we’ve gone from communicating via letters and telegrams to instant face-to-face communication anywhere in the world on our mobile devices. Transportation has evolved from wagon-like autos to all-electric, self-driving cars. And because of rapid information sharing, we’re making huge strides in fields such as medicine and education.
Smart devices and A.I. will have their seat at the table, no doubt. But it’s people that make all the difference. After all, it was people who put planes in the sky. People who landed us on the moon. People who invented the internet and social media. And it is people who will continue to build new-age businesses and create a better environment for the nearly 8 billion people on our planet.
In our annual People Issue, we take a look at the inspiring individuals who are shaping the world we live in today. We profile risk taking entrepreneurs who are building businesses and leaving footprints for others to follow. Creative innovators who are designing the self-driving cars and medical devices that will save lives. And philanthropic individuals who are giving huge portions of their vast wealth to make the world a better place.
I’m proud to share with you the dynamic, change-making people who are propelling us fearlessly into the future and helping humanity soar to new heights.
