Opening in 2010, Black Hogg has taken over the foodie scene in Silver Lake. Chef Eric Park uses the small plates concept to give the neighborhood crowd regionally selected food in a non-intimidating atmosphere.
Formerly of the Spotted Pig in New York City, Chef Eric continues to push the dining envelope. He loves to cook with parts of the pig or cow most restaurants wouldn’t consider using. He not only cooks the odd parts but fuses them with American classics. Black Hogg’s hits include the marrow corn, locally grown sweet corn with roasted bone marrow and cotija cheese.
Other dinner favorites include the báhn mì liver toast. A staple in Vietnamese cooking, the five-spice chicken liver is paired with pickled carrots and crispy chicken. For bacon lovers, there’s Bossam burnt ends – roasted pork belly ends, honey gem lettuce, house-made kimchi and a fermented spicy dip.
Other choices include the marrow burger with a house-secret burger blend, onions and roasted marrow; and the whole fish – a deep-fried Black Sea bream topped with chimichurri sauce.
The bustling Silver Lake restaurant always stays ahead of the curve. During lunch, Black Hogg switches to an Italian sandwich menu it calls Sopressata naming the whole menu in honor of Italian salami. Quick and delicious sandwich options abound – the Number 99 is the sopressata sandwich consisting of provolone picante, aged balsamic and artichokes; the Number 88 is Italian meats with sopressata, mortadella, Molinari coppa, provolone picante and wild arugula. So many meat and cheese options are on the menu, there is a sandwich for everyone in the office. Sopressata is available Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until they run out of bread.
Black Hogg has recently gone through its second remodel and, in early June, Chef Eric remodeled the menu and concept of his restaurant. Always wanting to keep foodies’ attention on Black Hogg, Chef Eric has given the Silver Lake community its own identity with a New York flair. Stop by Black Hogg to satisfy your palate with the short rib and tendon asada and finish the evening off with five leches bread pudding – brioche, brown butter apples, pecans and salty vanilla ice cream.
Black Hogg’s extensive menu has sparked quite the buzz in Silver Lake for the past four years and, with reservations booked full every night, it isn’t going anywhere.
